The Oath of Love Chinese Drama Review

Cute, awkward & emotional, The Oath of Love is a Chinese drama (C-drama) consisting of 29 episodes that aired on the 15th of March 2022.

Synopsis of The Oath of Love

The Oath of Love starring Yang Zi & Xiao Zhan tells the story of young cellist Lin Zhi Xiao, a junior in the university's music program who is motivated to follow her aspirations. When her father was hospitalized and given a cancer diagnosis, she and her mother faced numerous uncertainties. Subsequently, she began to have numerous interactions with Gu Wei, her father’s doctor. Gu Wei who appeared cold in nature had been going through his own difficulties as well. Their first encounter with each other was very awkward and unexpected which added an element of humor to the show. As time went by they became more acquainted and started to understand each other better.

What did I like about the C-drama “The Oath of Love”?

I appreciated that this show humanized the medical profession. Often times doctors are seen as robots always caring for others 24/7. We rarely get to see them as regular people with struggles, emotions, and feelings. The show also highlighted the hardworking nature of doctors who are often underpaid and overworked.  It was great to see a character like Gu Wei who had weaknesses and was not portrayed as perfect. Although Gu Wei appeared cold on the outside he was very warm-hearted. Moreover, He was a great doctor and friend. For instance, he defended Lin Zhi Xiao when her fellow musicians made fun of her and he also defended her in front of his colleagues.

I also liked that the male lead Gu Wei was such a gentleman. In one scene he could tell that Lin Zhi Xiao was on her period although she did not say anything. Additionally, she was really stressed because of her father’s condition so Gu Wei went into the pharmacy and bought all the period products she would need. Gu Wei was also very supportive of Lin Zhi Xiao’s music career and never saw her as ‘less than’. He also did not force her to do things that she was uncomfortable doing unlike the men of today so his character was quite refreshing to see in this drama.

Although the plot started off slow, it picked up momentum by episode 9 in which a little humor was added to the storyline and then episode 19 where a lot of humor was incorporated. I literally laughed the entire episode. Apart from the main characters, I must say one of my favorite characters was Madam Li. The support that she gave her daughter was just refreshing to see and her personality, in general, was very likable.

Episode 27 and episode 29 were the two most emotional episodes in my opinion. One cannot help but cry at the immense love and support happening in both episodes.

All in all, although the progression of the plot was slow, this show was really enjoyable and I appreciated the natural realistic pace of the series. “The Oath of Love” definitely lives up to its name because despite the many negative influences surrounding their relationship true love conquered all!
